They may use fake videos or photos to bolster their claims, police say. Eventually, chats between the scammers and their victims turn sexual, at which point a video chat is suggested. If the victim agrees, he or she is asked to undress and engage in sexual behaviour, police said.

At that point, the video chat stops, and the owner of the fake profile threatens to post the compromising video online unless money is paid. Toronto police are advising residents to take advantage of privacy filters on social media sites to protect their personal information. They also warn that Internet users should verify the identity of a person before deciding to trust them.
